Over the past few years, there has been a lot of buzz around capsule wardrobes, but it took me a long time to try one out. What held me back?
Honestly, the idea of narrowing down my wardrobe felt daunting. I thought that by limiting my wardrobe, I would hinder my creativity. (Am I alone in this?) But earlier this year, my mindset changed after I tried out a capsule wardrobe for a month.
Why Did I Love Having a Capsule Wardrobe?
- I got to wear the items I loved ALL the time.
- I spent less time thinking about what I was going to wear.
- I got more use out of clothing I already owned.
I found that a capsule wardrobe provided me with the freedom to wear what I love, without feeling like I had nothing to wear. And, after the challenge, I realized I love the idea of a capsule wardrobe, SO much so, that I decided to create a capsule wardrobe for the fall! In the blog post below, you’ll find tips for selecting colors for a capsule wardrobe, and I reveal what colors have inspired my fall wardrobe.
How Do You Choose Your Capsule Clothing Color Palette?
Keep Versatility in Mind:
Before you begin selecting colors, you need to ask yourself the following questions:
- Do I want to wear this color and is it flattering?
- Can I mix and match the items I’m selecting?
Will this piece of clothing coordinate with other items in this capsule wardrobe?
Not all items will have to coordinate, but most of them should be able to be mixed and matched. (Sometimes, with a little creativity) That way, you can increase the number of outfit combinations!
Start With Your Base / Neutral Colors:
What colors do you wear most often during this time of the year? Begin by gathering making a list of these colors and items, and figure out ways you can build from them. (Think pants, jackets, basic tees, sweaters)
Add Color and Prints:
Capsule wardrobes don’t need to be boring. I repeat – capsule wardrobe don’t need to be boring. Find colors and prints that you love and add them to your wardrobe. Don’t be afraid to add bold colors or fun prints. I find that these are some of my favorite pieces in my collection.
What Colors and Prints Did I Select for my Fall Capsule Wardrobe?
When I think about fall this year, I think of deep reach colors and leopard print. (I mean, I don’t think you can ever have enough leopard print – am I right?)
- Blush Pink
- Leopard Print
My capsule wardrobe is made up of a mix of handmade items along with clothing I already owned.
After reviewing what I already had in my closet, I identified some gaps in my wardrobe and decided to add a few more handmade items to my closet. I worked with Minerva and found the perfect fabric to add to my capsule wardrobe. Over the upcoming months, there will be posts on my blog and Minerva about the projects. But for now, I wanted to provide you with links* to the fabric I selected:
- Black Fabric #1 – Plain Rayon Challis Dress Fabric
- Leopard Print – Lady McElroy Stretch Viscose Crepe Fabric Brown
- Wine Fabric – Crepe De Chine Dress Fabric
- Atelier Brunette Viscose Crepe Fabric in Maple
- Black Fabric #2: Lady McElroy Viscose Jersey Knit Fabric Black
I’m also planning on including an Orchid Midi Dress I made last year with another Atelier Brunette fabric. You can read more about that print and dress here on the Minerva website.
