10 Easy Steps to Styling Your Curly Hair
- Step 1: Lo-Poo or Co-Wash My Hair
- Step 2: Apply a sulfate free conditioner to the ends of my hair and let it soak
- Step 3: Turn the water down to cold and flip your head upside down. Next, rinse your hair in cold water to seal this hair cuticle. (This will help reduce frizz.) As you rinse your hair, begin to scrunch your hair to activate the curls.
- Step 4: Apply leave-in conditioner before I get out of the shower. (I also scrunch the product into my hair)
- Step 5: Apply the Climate Control Gel or Curl activating gel
- Step 6: Scrunch in two large handfuls of gel into your hair
- Step 7: Use a large t-shirt and hair plop your hair on top of your head. I sleep with this
- Step 8: Next, diffuse your hair on a low setting until your hair is completely dry
- Step 9: Once your hair is dry it might have a gel cast and look crunchy. To remove this layer, carefully scrunch your hair with your hands, a t-shirt or a microfiber towel.
- Step 10: Next, flip over your head and place your hands between your curls near your scalp. Shake out your curls to add additional volume (do not comb through your curls). Lock your curls in place by spraying hairspray on your hair.
I love how I can consistently get the curls I want when I style my hair this way. If you have any tips or suggestions for curly hair – let me know in the comments below!
An impressive share! I have just forwarded this
onto a colleague who had been conducting a little research
on this. And he in fact bought me dinner due to the fact that I stumbled upon it
for him… lol. So let me reword this…. Thank YOU for the meal!!
But yeah, thanx for spending the time to talk about this subject here
on your blog.
I’m very curious, because your hair looks very close to mine as well as your story. Have you stayed consistent with the curly girl method for several months now? Do you feel your curls have gotten better over time? I too have just started the curly girl method and I am almost finished with one month of being consistent with this method. I am loving how my hair looks and feels, now that I’ve figured out which products work for my hair. And I just go ahead and wet my hair every morning in the shower, apply my styling products, plop for whatever amount of time I feel like ? and then diffuse for 10 to 15 min. Then I’ll let it air dry the rest of the way, which normally doesn’t take too long. I’ll let it air dry while I get my son breakfast and give the baby a bottle. Overall I’m so happy with the CG method, my routine now takes me about the same amount of time as it used to take me to blow dry straight or curl. I used to do this routine at night and sleep in the crunch with my hair plopped, but sometimes I’d wake up with messy waves and flat roots. Doing this routine first thing in the morning even with the kids is not too bad and it makes me feel like I’m getting a little me time! Which every mom deserves! Thank you for this post! ?
Hi Kelsey! (Great name! 😉 )
Yay for starting the CG method. I followed about 98% of the rules for a little over 9 months and saw a big difference in my curls. My favorite way to style them was to wash it at night and hair plop my hair before bed. Like you, I had some difficulty at first but finally figured out a way to make it work. This helped lift up my curls at night, while also helping the drying process (I have a lot of hair), and in the morning, I would finish drying my hair on cool with a diffuser. BUT, it sounds like you found a method that works for you! Me/mom time in the morning is much needed! Keep me posted on your progress, here or feel free to message me on Instagram. What products do you recommend/use? How do you plop shorter-mid length hair (chin)? Txs.
Hi Marcia, what products are you currently using?
What brand gel and curl cream do you use?? I tried a curl activator and it weighed my hair down heavily. It was so bad I had to clarify the next day.
