Have you ever looked in your closet and thought you had nothing to wear – even though you had a TON of clothes hanging up? The problem may not be that you don’t have enough clothes, but that you aren’t thinking of the many ways you can wear them.
Where do you begin? It all starts with decluttering and getting rid of the clothes that no longer fit. I’m not going to sugarcoat this process. It’s going to take some time and will be challenging, but well worth it.
The tips in the blog post below will help you clear out your closet, and you’ll be on your way to creating the perfect wardrobe! (or capsule wardrobe)In the end, you’ll end up with a closet filled with items that fit and that you LOVE!
Step 1: Create a List of Item to Include in Your Capsule Wardrobe (Here’s a Free Download)
Before you begin, establish a goal for the number of clothes you’d like to have in your closet. To help you, I created a free checklist, so you can include notes and ideas to help you with this process!
Step 2: Empty Your Closet
Take EVERYTHING out of your closet. Seriously everything. First, it’s truly a sight to see when you have all of your clothing piled high in one place. Second, this will allow you to go through all of your clothes to see what you want to keep, store, or donate.
Step 3: Try On and Sort Clothing
Hold up each item or try it on and ask:
- Does it fit?
- Is it still in style?
- When was the last time I wore it?
Next, separate each piece of clothing into three different piles.
- Yes (Including Seasonal): These clothes can go right back into your closet.
- Maybe
- No (Donate): Put these clothes right into a box or bag so you can easily donate them.
Remember, don’t get discouraged. This process will take time to complete, but it’s important, and you’ll be glad you did it.
Step 4: Review Your YES and MAYBE Clothes
Now that your clothes are sorted, the next step is to take out your capsule wardrobe checklist and markdown the items you plan to include.
You’ll want to make sure to include 35-50 pieces of clothes that you love and that are appropriate for the season. Once you’re done, as yourself: am I missing anything?
Step 5: Donate
Now it’s time to load up your car and drop off the items you no longer need to a thrift store.
Now that you’re done – how do you feel? If you haven’t started yet, I encourage you to do so!
