Capsule wardrobes have gained a lot of buzz over the past few years, but I’ve never had a desire to try it out. But that changed when I decided to add it as a monthly challenge this year and test wearing a capsule wardrobe for a month. One of the best things about creating a capsule wardrobe is there are no rules. What? Honestly, there are no rules. YOU’RE the one making decisions on what you want to add to your collection. 🙂
What is a Capsule Wardrobe and How Do I Start One?
[pullquote width=”300″ float=”right”]“a collection of clothing that is composed of interchangeable items only, to maximize the number of outfits that can be created. The aim is to have an outfit suitable for any occasion without owning excessive items of clothing.”[/pullquote]
Before we jump into how to build a capsule wardrobe, let’s first define it. According to Wikipedia, a capsule wardrobe is “a collection of clothing that is composed of interchangeable items only, to maximize the number of outfits that can be created. The aim is to have an outfit suitable for any occasion without owning excessive items of clothing.” Typically, capsule wardrobes include 30-40 pieces, which provides you with enough items to mix, match, and create a variety of outfits for any given season.
Capsule Wardrobe Step 1: Start with the Basics
As you start to put together your capsule wardrobe, think about what basics (foundation pieces) you want to include. Look at your current wardrobe for timeless, classic pieces that match your everyday style. Ask yourself – what do you already have in your closet that you can use?
Basic Bottoms Idea to Include in your Capsule Wardrobe
- Dark wash jeans
- Light washed jeans
- 1-2 Skirts
- 1-2 Dresses
Basic Tops to include in your Capsule Wardrobe
- Button down chambray shirt
- White t-shirt
- Blouse
- Printed Top
- Knit Sweaters
Basic Jackets
- Denim Jacket
- Cardigan (1-2)
Step 2: Add Dressy Pieces
Make sure to add a few pieces that can dress up your outfits. Whether you need to dress up for work, a date night or a night out with your friends, adding a few dressy items to your capsule wardrobe is a must.
Dressy Piece Ideas to Add to Your Capsule Wardrobe
- Black Dress Pants
- Blazer(s)
- Dresses
Step 3: Add Fun, Trendy, and Colorful Pieces
Basics are the foundation of capsule wardrobes but don’t be afraid to add color to your collection. Adding bright and trendy pieces are a great way to mix up your outfits. Plus, these items will probably be the most fun to wear throughout the season.
Step 4: Decide if You’re Going to Include Accessories and Outerwear
Do you plan to add accessories and outerwear to your list of capsule wardrobe items? Since I will only be testing mine out for a month (to start), I don’t plan on including them in my wardrobe. Instead, I will add items that I already have in my closet to complete each look.
How to Organize Your Capsule Wardrobe
Tip: Store Your Capsule Wardrobe Items in One Place
Move ALL of your items to one area of your closet so you can easily access the items in the morning.
(Don’t get rid of the rest of your clothing just yet. Keep them or store them until you’re happy with your capsule wardrobe.)
Not Sure if You’re Ready to Have a Capsule Wardrobe? Try it Out for a Month!
What’s the harm in trying it out for a month? At the end of your 30-31 day challenge, you’ll know if you love it or hate it! I know that I’m excited to try it out or a month. I’ve already curated my collection and am looking forward to selecting what I’m going to wear from limited options (that I love), instead of staring at my closet wondering what I’m going to put on for the day!
