Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can be very technical, complicated and overwhelming. Keyword research is an essential part of my SEO strategy, and it’s important that I do it correctly. With so much information out there, how do you know where to begin and what is important? In this blog post, you’ll learn more about keywords and how they should impact your SEO strategy.
What are keywords in SEO and why are they important?
Keywords are the specific words or phrases people enter into search engines when conducting a search online. The top-ranked keywords come up first in search results, so it’s important to implement them properly in your site. The higher you rank for a keyword phrase, the greater the chance your organic listing will be viewed and you’ll receive traffic from organic search results. Optimizing for keywords takes time, strategy and quality content.
Basics of keyword research
Let’s start off with an example: I recently started a bullet journal, and wanted to complete some research before I began. The first two results from my “bullet journal” search brought up www.bulletjournal.com, which allowed me to learn more about what it means to have a bullet journal. This two word phrase is known as a short tail keyword phrase.
What are short tail keywords?
Short tail keywords are approximately 1 – 3 word phrases that are generic phrases and usually have high competition in search results.
After completing my initial search, I wanted to learn more about what it means to bullet journal, so I entered the following keyword phrases into Google: “what is a bullet journal” and “where to buy a bullet journal.” These longer keyword phrases are known as long-tail keyword phrases.
What are long-tail keywords?
These keyword phrases tend to be longer than 3 words and are more descriptive. Users searching long tail keywords are usually farther along in the information gathering process, know more about their topic and are asking detailed questions. Long tail keyword phrases that are frequently searched make great blog post topics.
Why are keywords important for SEO?
Now that we have an understanding of what keywords are, the next question to ask is why are they important for SEO? Including relevant keywords throughout your content will help your site ranking. Here are some examples of where you can use keywords throughout your site:
- URL Names
- Title Tags
- Meta Descriptions
- Header Tags
- Throughout Copy
- Alt / Title Text
